Full Review
Back in 1995 it was unheard of to bring a character using computer graphics to life let alone produce an entire world populated full of them for a feature length film. Toy Story is a stroke of genius from the studio Pixar which departed from Disney when their ideas were thrown out the window for being "ridiculous". How wrong they are now.
Toy Story is not only a technical breakthrough but also a clever take on toys and about fitting in and adjusting. The story revolves around a group of loveable toys that are concerned with the newest addition Buzz Lightyear- a brand new space toy. Andy's "favourite" Woody, a cowboy toy, is worried his place is under jeopardy and what transpires is a story of adjustment, fitting in, jealousy and friendship.
What works so well is the personality of the characters. Its startling at times to think its all CGI and the voices are what brings the toys to life. At times the two are so well integrated its difficult to tell the difference. Its hard enough in a normal film to make loveable characters but to do so in a film solely shot on the computer is startling.
Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are by far the standouts as Woody and Buzz. The two brilliant actors really bring the toys to life and deserve the praise heaped upon them. Tom Hanks in particular portrays Woody to perfection. The range of emotions are conveyed perfectly by Hanks and Tim Allen is equally as brilliant as the space toy.
I've struggled to find any negatives with this film and its difficult to fault this masterpiece. The music is brilliant and the theme tune "You've got a friend in me", which plays at the opening credits, is one of the most iconic moments in any Pixar film. It conveys the atmosphere of the film perfectly and the rest of the music is equally as iconic.
Overall, Toy Story is a masterpiece and a stroke of genius from Pixar Studios. Its the film that solidified their place at the forefront of computer storytelling innovation and is well deserved. Toy Story is a film that isn't just for kids and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. There are so many clever and memorable moments throughout the film that telling you any would be spoiling this film. A must watch.
