Brief Review

Jeepers Creepers is an oddball off the shelves in 2001 with a horror that had a beginning filled with promise. The creepy and tense atmosphere is squandered as the film progresses, along with the believability that goes along with that. The acting is average at best in this genre with a laughable creature as the monster to top it all off. Unfortunately, this film doesn't live up to the promise the beginning makes.

Full Review

Jeepers Creepers is a film released in 2001 that tries to deliver a suspenseful experience whilst steering clear of the clichés around the genre by introducing new settings. Unfortunately, after an excellent beginning, the film falls apart and becomes a laughable mess.

The story revolves around a brother and sister driving home for the holidays only to discover a mysterious man throwing what appears to be body bags down a chute. In an act of "heroism" they decide to return to the scene a little while later to discover all sorts of nasty things. Eventually it results in being chased by a strange creature on a ritualistic eating spree where it takes body parts to keep it surviving.

If the story sounds nuts, well, it is. The suspense and terror only remains temporarily before the film buckles under the high standards the beginning sets. The whole film almost turns into a comedy after the disastrous stitched bodies in the basement that look extremely unrealistic and like someone has painted a load of mannequins. If it couldn't get any worse, it does.

The creature itself is shrouded in cloaks for the first half of the film but as soon as its identity is revealed I found myself amused and bewildered at how stupid the creature looked. A giant fly/human hybrid doesn't even sound scary let alone look scary and with massive wings and dozy eyes it just doesn't look up to scratch. Maybe its just me but it really did ruin the experience for me.

The acting is average at best with nothing that really stands out. The terrified brother and sister certainly capture the terror invoked by the creature but sometimes its a little overdone and the lack of brains from the pair doesn't help. It's a daft horror yes but some films in this genre at least do it better than this one.

The music and sound effects aren't anything special and the special effects on the creature aren't really that impressive either. Average scores all round in this department are generous to say the least and the lack of originality throughout doesn't help to spice things up on this disappointing horror.

Overall, Jeepers Creepers is a daft, laughable mess of a horror that works better as a spoof and a comedy than a suspenseful horror. The beginning of the film is excellent but the lack of originality and the overall unbelievable plot drags the score down on this film. The acting is average at best and to say this film is mediocre is being generous at best. Probably worth a rental but that's about it.
